Nickle, Silver and Chrome
Door Knocker Information
Door knockers have become ornamental additions
to home entryways that go well beyond basic functionality. The old
cast iron knockers have been augmented by a vast array of designs
manufactured from a number of different metals and alloys. The noted
door fixture designer Michael Healy has developed a technique of
designing door knockers that use two types of metal in order to obtain
contrasting colors and textures. One of these alloys is bronze (which
has copper as its principal ingredient) mixed with nickel to create
an alloy that provides a silvery cast to the bronze base. This is
called nickle silver and is used to create nickle silver and chrome
door knockers by combining the two metals.
In many cases the chrome offsets the nickle silver alloy in designs
where you might expect a change in color or appearance. For instance,
there is a pineapple nickle silver and chrome door knocker available
that has leaves wrapping up around the base of the cross-hatched,
oval pineapple and pointed leaves arcing out of the top of the pineapple.
The leaves are done in chrome, while the pineapple has a darker,
more subtle coloring. The result is a whimsical nickle silver and
chrome door knocker resembling a tropical pineapple, cast and finished
in excellent detail with two metallic finishes to add dimension.
• There
is a beautiful Victorian urn nickle silver and chrome door knocker
that has an urn shaped base cast
from nickle silver
and a chrome band around its widest point.
• Another nickle silver and chrome door
knocker creation is a golf putter head and ball with a short chrome
shaft.
• You can put a nickle silver and chrome
sand dollar door knocker on your door for would-be visitors to
the coastal cottage.
• For a whimsical nickle silver and chrome
door knocker you can select a wonderful frog with four three-toed
legs stretched out
above and below his body.
• Another offbeat choice is a stylized
star with a new moon mounted on it: here is a great example of a
nickel
silver and chrome
door knocker using the two metals as offsets.
• A
traditional and eye-catching choice is the nickle silver and chrome
lion's head with a full textured
mane and two hollow eyes.
